Edited and published by LA MANO PRESS, a young, professional art studio
and publishing house dedicated to the promotion of printmaking. Directed
by painter, graphic designer Silvia Capistran and printmaker Artemio Rodríguez,
creator of some of the most iconic images about day of the dead. The book captures
a visual tradition that has deep roots in pre-hispanic times, and later had
its revival in the XIX and XX century in Mexico thanks to the amazing popular
illustrations of Manuel Manilla and Jose Guadalupe Posada.
This tradition of creating images to portray death and the many aspects
related to it, has taken hold in celebrations in Los Angeles, Chicago, San
Francisco,
México city and others parts of the world. Future PURO MUERTO volumes
will collect visual art expressions created during festivities wherever they
are celebrated. View pages from the book.
Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Downtown Libray now til March 4th.
